New version of Eclipse - Europa released Print E-mail

New release of Eclipse - Europa ReleaseEclipse's Europa is the release for 2007 of the synchronized release of the of 21 plugins for Eclipse. As last year release, Callisto, Europa coordinates the release of 21 projects under the Eclipse project.

By releasing 21 different project in Europa, release incompatibilities between different project plugins are eliminated, and makes it easier to install several plugins in a single Eclipse installation that depends on the same plugins.

Among other plug-ins released in Eclipse's Europa we can point out the following:

  • AspectJ Development Tools (AJDT)
  • Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools (BIRT)
  • C/C++ Development Tools (CDT)
  • Data Tools Platform (DTP)
  • Device Software Development Platform
  • Dynamic Languages Toolkit (DLTK)
  • Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF)
  • Graphical Editing Framework
  • Graphical Modeling Framework
  • SOA Tools Platform (STP)
  • Web Tools Platform (WTP)

Europa Advantage

The improvements to use Europa instead of a simple Eclipse install with several plug-ins is that it is easier to install several projects into a single Eclipse image compared to the manual installation.

By manually installing the Eclipse plug-ins you have to take care of the version compatibility o different plug-ins and its dependencies between them. If a compatible version of the plug-in doesn't exist you will have to install two different Eclipse images for executing the two different plug-ins. With Europa the dependencies are synchronized, so no version problem exists.

Also it is easier to install Europa version than manually installing several plug-ins , just point your update manager to the Europa update site and you will be able to download any of the 21 projects included in the Europa release.

Vendor and ISV Support

Several ISV have chosen Europa for development. To name a few:

  • Access
  • Actuate
  • Adobe
  • Bea
  • QNX
  • IBM

and other vendors. All of them support the development through Europa release.

About Eclipse

Eclipse is an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) developed by IBM and distributed  through an Open Source License, the Eclipse Public License (EPL).

At the beginning Eclipse was just a Java IDE, but through its flexible plug-in architecture, it has become a generic IDE platform and along its Eclipse RCP platform a generic product development platform, supported by a broad community of software developers, both companies and individuals. You can use Eclipse to code in C/C++, Java, Python, Groovy, Perl and many other languages, completely supporting the development platforms of Java:  J2SE, J2EE and J2SE.
